Ingestion volume
us-east-1list rates, pricing as of 2026-10-20. Firehose has no per-destination fee. Destination charges (S3 storage, OpenSearch, Redshift, Splunk), Lambda transforms, and Kinesis Data Streams source charges bill separately and are excluded. VPC delivery assumes 2 AZs. Source: AWS public pricing.
$0.029/GB ingestion in us-east-1.
Delivery destination
Firehose charges the same for every destination. Only delivery into a VPC adds a Firehose fee.

FactualMinds designs log routing architectures — Firehose to S3 for retention, OpenSearch for search, and sampling to cut ingestion volume.

Data engineers and FinOps leads choosing between Firehose destinations for logs, events, and streaming ETL.
Why We Built This Tool
Firehose bills $0.029/GB ingested whatever the destination. The destination drives the rest of the bill: an OpenSearch domain or Redshift cluster costs far more than S3 storage.
What Problem It Solves
- Wrong destination. Shipping all logs to OpenSearch when only 5% need search means sizing a domain for 100% of the volume. S3 + Athena holds the rest for cents per GB.
- CloudWatch comparison. Firehose to S3 at ~$0.029/GB vs CloudWatch Logs at $0.50/GB ingest — 94% cheaper for retention.
- Conversion overhead. Parquet conversion adds $0.018/GB — worth it for Athena query savings, not for raw archive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do these Data Firehose prices come from?
AWS published us-east-1 list prices (Amazon Data Firehose pricing), pricing as of 2026-10-20.
Is delivery to S3 free?
S3 delivery has no additional per-GB Firehose charge beyond ingestion (and optional format conversion). You still pay S3 storage separately.
Does Firehose charge more to deliver to OpenSearch or Redshift?
No. Firehose has no per-destination delivery fee in us-east-1. The difference is the destination itself: OpenSearch domain and Redshift cluster hours bill separately. The one delivery fee is VPC delivery, $0.01/GB plus $0.01 per AZ-hour, when the destination sits inside a VPC.
Does Lambda data transformation cost extra in Firehose?
Firehose does not charge for invoking a Lambda transform. You pay AWS Lambda for the invocations and duration at normal Lambda rates.
How does Firehose compare to CloudWatch Logs?
CloudWatch Logs ingestion is $0.50/GB. Firehose ingestion is $0.029/GB — route retention logs to S3 via Firehose and reserve CloudWatch for real-time alerting.
What does format conversion cost?
Converting to Parquet or ORC adds $0.018/GB. The trade-off is cheaper Athena queries and smaller S3 storage over time.
Do I need Kinesis Data Streams with Firehose?
Firehose can ingest directly from producers or use Kinesis Data Streams as a source. Kinesis shard hours bill separately if you use streams as a buffer.
