Why We Built This Tool
Kendra's edition fees (~$821–$1,022/month) are just the floor — each additional storage or query unit adds $0.70/hour (~$511/month), so a large corpus can multiply the base fee.
What Problem It Solves
- Hidden capacity costs. Teams provision extra query CUs for peak periods without modeling hourly billing accumulation.
- Edition confusion. Developer Edition looks cheaper but caps at 10K documents and cannot add capacity units.
- Kendra is in maintenance. New workforce assistants go to Quick Suite. New developer search goes to Bedrock Knowledge Bases.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Kendra Query Capacity Unit and how does it bill?
Each additional query unit adds 0.1 QPS (about 8,000 queries/day) to a Basic Enterprise Edition index. Units bill at $0.70/hour while provisioned — one extra unit for a full month (730 hours) adds about $511 on top of the ~$1,022 base. Storage units bill the same $0.70/hour and each adds 100K documents or 30 GB of extracted text.
Developer Edition vs Enterprise Edition: which to choose?
Developer Edition (~$821/month) is suited for proof-of-concept work — it includes up to 10K documents or 3 GB and 0.05 QPS, with no additional capacity options. Enterprise Edition (~$1,022/month base) includes 100K documents or 30 GB and 0.1 QPS, adds high availability, and accepts additional storage and query units. Production workloads should use Enterprise.
What is included in the Developer Edition base price?
The Developer Edition ($1.125/hour, ~$821/month) includes a fixed index with up to 10,000 documents or 3 GB of extracted text, whichever comes first, and 0.05 QPS (about 4,000 queries/day). No additional capacity units are available, and AWS does not recommend it for production.
What replaces Kendra for a new project?
Kendra is in maintenance for new customers after July 30, 2026. Use Amazon Quick Suite for an employee-facing assistant, and Bedrock Knowledge Bases when the search runs inside your own application. This calculator remains for existing Kendra indexes. Amazon Q Business is also in maintenance — it is not the replacement.
Are Kendra pricing rates the same in all AWS regions?
This calculator models us-east-1 list rates as of 2026-10-17. Rates may differ in other regions. Verify current pricing at AWS Kendra pricing before committing.
What does the GenAI Enterprise Edition cost?
The GenAI Enterprise index is $0.32/hour (~$234/month) for 1 storage unit (20K documents or 200 MB of extracted text) and 1 query unit (0.1 QPS). Extra storage units are $0.25/hour and extra query units $0.07/hour. AWS recommends it over the Basic editions for accuracy.
Does connector pricing add to the base edition cost?
Yes. On GenAI Enterprise a connector is a flat $30 per index per month, including up to 500 sync hours. On Basic Developer and Basic Enterprise, connectors bill $0.35/hour while syncing plus $1 per 1M documents scanned — this calculator does not model the Basic-edition sync charge.
