Who This Tool Is For

Frontend platform teams, media delivery owners, and FinOps partners forecasting CDN spend. Anyone asking whether to optimize bytes or requests first.

Why We Built This Tool

CloudFront bills blend tiered egress with per-10k request fees — at scale either can dominate. This calculator separates the two so you know which knob to turn first.

What Problem It Solves

  • Tiered egress. Seven US egress tiers from $0.085/GB down to $0.02/GB beyond 5 PB, applied in order.
  • Flat-rate check. Names the cheapest Free / Pro / Business / Premium plan whose allowance covers your traffic.
  • Request split. HTTPS vs HTTP priced independently.
  • Free tier toggle. Always-free 1 TB egress + 10M requests + 2M Functions invocations.
  • Dominance callout. Highlights egress vs requests winner for optimization focus.
  • Edge compute. Lambda@Edge and CloudFront Functions with optional Security Savings Bundle.

Pair with S3 pricing for origin storage and FinOps services for cache tuning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these prices come from?

CloudFront United States edge rates as of October 2026: $0.085/GB first 10 TB, $0.08 next 40 TB, $0.06 next 100 TB, $0.04 next 350 TB, $0.03 next 524 TB, $0.025 next 4 PB, $0.02 beyond 5 PB; HTTPS $0.01/10k and HTTP $0.0075/10k requests.

Should I use a flat-rate plan instead?

CloudFront flat-rate plans bill one distribution at a fixed monthly price with no overage charges: Free $0 (1M requests / 100 GB), Pro $15 (10M / 50 TB), Business $200 (125M / 50 TB), Premium $1,000 (500M / 50 TB, configurable up to 6B requests / 600 TB for $10,000). Plans also bundle AWS WAF, Route 53 DNS, CloudWatch Logs ingestion and S3 storage credits. Past the allowance AWS may serve traffic from fewer edge locations rather than charging more. The result shows the cheapest plan whose allowance covers your requests and data transfer.

Origin costs included?

S3/ALB origin fetch and WAF are billed separately. Lambda@Edge and CloudFront Functions are modeled via the edge-compute sliders.

Free tier details?

Every AWS account receives 1 TB CloudFront egress, 10M HTTP/HTTPS requests and 2M CloudFront Functions invocations free each month (not time-limited) — modeled via checkbox.

Regional price classes?

Price Class All / 200 / 100 apply approximate multipliers to the US/Europe egress baseline. Exact regional rates vary — confirm in the AWS Pricing Calculator for multi-region traffic mixes.

Invalidations?

First 1,000 paths/month free; additional invalidation paths bill per AWS rate card — not modeled.

How accurate is this estimate?

Tier math matches published egress steps for GB input. Validate request totals and regional classes in the AWS Pricing Calculator.
