EMR uplift is added on top of EC2.
Task nodes also pay the EMR uplift, even on Spot.
Driver runs once per job; executors scale with parallelism.
Runtime & storage
EC2: cluster uptime. Serverless: aggregate job runtime.
$0.08/GB-month per node.
Idle capacity increases effective cost per unit of work.

Why We Built This Tool
EMR bills EC2 plus a per-node uplift on every node, task nodes included — easy to undercount when you only model instance list prices.
What Problem It Solves
- Cluster shape budget. Master, core, and task nodes each bill differently.
- EMR uplift surprise. Every node, task nodes included, carries ~25% on top of EC2 hourly rates.
- Serverless vs persistent. Serverless wins for intermittent jobs; EC2 + Spot wins at sustained utilization.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does EMR charge on top of EC2?
Yes. EMR on EC2 bills the underlying EC2 instance rate plus an EMR uplift (~25%) on every node. Task nodes pay it too, and it stays at the On-Demand-based rate even when the task node runs on Spot.
Which nodes get the EMR uplift?
Every node pays it: master, core, and task. Task nodes on Spot still pay the uplift at the On-Demand-based rate, so Spot cuts only the EC2 half of a task node's cost. A common pattern is On-Demand master/core with Spot task nodes.
How does Spot pricing apply to task nodes?
EMR on EC2 supports Spot Instances for task nodes (and core nodes with fault tolerance). This calculator applies a 65% Spot discount as a planning estimate on task nodes only.
What is EMR Serverless billed on?
EMR Serverless bills vCPU-hours at $0.052624 and memory GB-hours at $0.0057785 in us-east-1. You pay only while jobs run — no cluster idle cost.
Does this include S3, Glue, or data transfer?
No. This calculator covers EMR compute (EC2 + uplift + EBS, or Serverless vCPU/memory). S3 storage, Glue catalog, and inter-AZ data transfer bill separately.
Where do these EMR prices come from?
Rates are AWS published us-east-1 list prices (AWS EMR pricing), pricing as of 2026-10-20.
